Samoa is a group of 9 islands situated in the South Pacific, east of the International Date Line. The islands have a total land area of approximately 2,831 sq km. The administrative and commercial centre is situated in its capital, Apia. At various stages, it has been administered by Britain, Germany and New Zealand. English is the standard language used by the government and commerce. Since its independence, it has developed into a politically stable nation.
